Being a Mom

For so long motherhood was a dream that seemed so unattainable and so far away. Frustration and sadness were feelings that I lived with daily. Then adoption was the plan and that brought new purpose to our lives. The paper chase was fast and furious with twists and turns that caused daily changes in how we were forming our family. The buildup to an adoption is so different than pregnancy. We don't have the growing belly, instead we have over three inches of paperwork with finger printing, visas, and LOIs to wait for, in addition to many uncertainties and little control.
However, it was all worth it when we walked into room nine and saw Zachary in his playpen with his huge eyes staring right at us. For us, instant love. The next six years were filled with joy and happines, soon it was time to go back to Karaganda. I remember spending time with the babies and Don and I looked at each other, knowing in that instant that we were going to have another son. Alex was so little, had beautiful blue eyes red from a cold, and a thumb that was forever in his mouth. Who knew that our little guy would grow up to be such a ball of fire?
Today I watch them and marvel at their growth. Zack will be eleven! He has such a great sense of humor and has embraced the moody preteen phase with all he's got;) He loves music and is in a band with his buddies, rocking out to AC/DC and sitting at the "The Burnin' Rockers lunch table" with his buddies. Alex, who will be four, has the energy and fire of I don't know what. He plays, learns, and loves with abandon, throwing himself into everything he does. He is smart, loving, and hits a baseball like it's his job!
I am sure that more of the adoption questions will come, as will the sadness; but I know that they will also understand that we moved heaven and earth to be their parents. I couldn't imagine being the mom to anyone other than Zachary and Alexander.

Dirt and Blue Uniforms

My boys are growing up:) Zachary received his blue uniform in Tae Kwon Do due to his committent and work ethic in class. He was soooo excited and the cheesy grin says it all. The boys have been so excited to play outside, and the pictures of Alex are from some great fire truck playing in the driveway. What was funny was that he dragged dirt onto the driveway to use instead of playing in the sandbox. Pretreat!

This spring also brings some great presentations by the adoption group that I belong to, Adoptive Families of the Capital Region. Upcoming events include pesentations on ADHD and Adoption, Prospective Parents Group, and International Children's Day, besides playgroups and other weekend activities. It is such a great resource for parents who have children that were adopted or are thinking of it as a way to form a future family. I love that if I have adoption questions or just need to vent, I have a great group of friends to talk to. My boys love going to the family events, and I am glad that the kids will have each other as they grow up and deal with the cirumstances of their adoption. Ups and Downs

This week has had it's ups and downs. We ended last weekend with Zachary getting diagnosed with strep and staying home with mom on Monday. The week continued with Cub Scout bowling, Tae Kwon Do, and lots of playing outside. The scooters were taken out and Alex mowed the last of the snow for us;) We have decided that we have gotten a taste of spring and won't be content until the daffodils are in bloom!
Alex is recognizing letters from his name in everything that he sees and luckily he had another successful week potty training. The boys got to spend some wonderful time with family on Saturday while mommy and daddy went out. Alex got up Saturday morning and packed his bag, mind you they weren't leaving until after five. You can imagine how well Alex took that news. Natalia and Anna wore my boys out as they were both snoring in the car on the way home. Thank you Heather!!!!! Sunday came and we went to Zachary's blue and gold dinner for Cub Scouts. We had a vey nice time and Zachary got some pins that he earned. In June he will cross over to become a Boy Scout, and I get to put all of those badges on yet another shirt;)

Master Lee Rocks!

Zachary passed his Tae Kwon Do belt test with flying colors! Zachary tested for his yellow belt tonight and did a great job!!!!!!! For an hour and half we watched as the infamous Master Lee (that's for you Christine;) put Zachary through his patterns and sparring. He was so focused and loved every minute of it, especially when Master Lee gave him compliments as the testing progressed. At the end of he testing Master Lee told me how awesome Zack is and how focused he is in class. He loves it, and we are so proud of his dedication.

Alex is Alex and could not wait to try the moves when the test was over. He is loving his big boy status and is rocking the big boy undies, telling all of Zack's friends of his new "attire". Luckily, Zack has great friends and they all have congratulated him. To cute:)

2010 Begins!

It has been so long since I have updated this bog that I considered ending it. However, both sets of granparents are now in Florida so I have decided to update it far more requently so they can see how the boys are doing. The Baldwins have been busy since I last posted. Zachary is still very involved in Tae Kwon Do and loves his instructor, Master Lee. Zachary also loves to tell me that even though Master Lee is shorter than me, he could kill me if he wanted to. Luckily for me Master Lee's interest is in inspiring my son and not maiming his mother;) Thursday night he will be tested for his yellow belt and hopefully he will get his blue uniform as well. They make sure to send notes home periodically to commend Zachary on a great class and you can see Zack stand a little straighter when he reads them.
Zack band, The Burnin' Rockers continue to perform and the boys get together frequently to practice for their next gig, which I am afraid is Zack's birthday party;) Their new material is comprised of AC/DC songs, some Bon Jovi, and an original compilation called "Silver Sword" (in which every person has a five minute solo, so you can imagine how that goes). Second quarter was a great one for Zack and he is again an A student with a wonderful comment about his musical talent. My good friend's husband plays guitar and is amazed how Zach can pick apart songs and play so well. Zack does love that captive audience;)
My little imp, Alex is growing by leaps and bounds. The pediatrician is so happy with his progress and growth and we are sooooo happy that potty training is almost finished:) Alex learns so much at daycare and besides the ABCs, colors and such, Alex can sing the chorus to "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap". Do you see a theme???
Every morning when Alex first wakes up, we let him lay in bed and he calls for us when he's ready (otherwise we have a very cranky boy on our hands). Getting in and out of bed is not a problem for Alex, but for some reason he will not get up until we open his door (thank God for small favors). For the last week we have gone to Alex's room in the morning and have walked in to see Alex laying on his bed, with his bed completely made, and a huge smile on his face. I love to tease Zachary that his three year old brother makes his bed neater (and faster) than he does:)
The New Year brings so many things for us. We have already celebrated Chinese New Year, enjoyed the Russian Winter Festival, and are gearing up for Easter, Kaz's Spring Celebration, and most important, the days that we met and adopted our sons.
So often I find myself looking at my wonderful sons and feeling so lucky to be able to be their mom. I think of all that their birth parents have had to sacrifice in order to give their sons a better life. I wonder what their lives would have been like; relationsv hips, schooling, language. So many diferences, but at heart I know that they would be the same loveable boys that they are today. For that, I am so blessed and thankful.

Christmas is coming!

Holiday season is in full swing and so far we have enjoyed the Christmas parade, Christmas tree hunting, and visiting Holiday Lights. We loved watching Zachary earn his white and yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do. I have watched Zack in class, but you can't hear anything with the door shut. His teacher, Master Lee, is such an incredible teacher. You could see how the kids responded to him as he praised, taught, and congratulated them. I am so glad that Zack wanted to join as I think it has done great things for his confidence.

Today was our first snowday and we had a great day. We all enjoyed time outside and had a rousing snowball fight, with both boys having incredibly good aim. A small but quite adorable snowman was built (thanks Aunt Louise for the snowman kit all those years ago) and hot chocolate was enjoyed by all. We ended the night with decorating a gingerbread train and making snickerdoodles; a relaxing day it was not:) But, a very fun one none the less.

I love watching how Zack and Alex grow and change. Alex is so taken by the wonder of the season and jumps with excitement at every commercial and Christmas special. He races to every destination and copies everything that Zack does, telling me he's a big boy. Zack on the other hand, has the swagger that I dare say he was born with. He still love his Star Wars, but AC/DC is up there as well. We are going to a school play next week where Zachary is the lead-Scrooge. The British accent is alive and well in our home and Zack is practicing his lines like a pro. Though he is cool 5th grader by day, I look forward to our bedtime ritual of Zack and I reading our bedtime books to Alex. Special times.

It seems so hard to believe that the end of fall is here and Christmas is around the corner! We have been a busy family these last few months and are looking forward to slowing down a little. Fall was filled with lots of fun things. We visited Westpoint and enjoyed a great concert given by the Marine Corps Band. The Baldwins went apple picking at Bowman's and played lots of Nerf guns at the fire house. I was busy with our local adoption group, AFCR, going to workshops, helping at at the Adoption Fair at the Marriot, and enjoying brunch with my sons and other familes formed by adoption. It is so great to see our kids laugh and play together, and funny to hear them compare birthplaces, making it sound boring if someone was born in the USA;)
Alex has returned to day care and is loving life. He enjoys spending time with Cheryl and all of his friends. Every day in the car I ask him how his day was, and Alex's reply is usually, "I had fun at Cheryl's today Mommy." He is learning his colors, can count, and knows his ABC's! Every day is an adventure with Alex, and his goal is to be as mischevious along the way as possible. The sun continues to rise and set with Zack, and Alex has even convinced him to join us when reading our bedtime stories.

Zachary has had a great return to school and is an A student. He has begun playing the trombone and loves it. I am pleasantly surprised that he sounds so good already. Tae Kwon Do is a new activity for Zack as well, and he loves showing us what Master Lee has taught him. His band, The Burnin' Rockers continue to thrive, and we have had many weekends of practice and a couple "concerts" thrown into the mix as well. My son the rocker;)

Halloween came and went, with a very busy (and soggy) night. The boys trick or treated in the rain with a friend and their cousins Emily, Kara, and Morgan. After collecting the loot, all of the kids were in the boys' clothes as everyone was completely soaked. The next week we had an assembly to attend as Zachary was named a student of good character. He was so proud of himself, as we were of him.

Thanksgiving is next week and my class has already cooked 71 pounds of turkey and prepped 10 bags of stuffing for our 12th annual Thanksgiving dinner. Having my own Thanksgivning dinner on Thursday should be a breeze;) Happy Thanksgiving everyone:)

No, Emily was just that exhausted. My sweet niece was an active participant in Alex's birthday party and just couldn't party any more.
My baby turned three today! It doesn't seem possible that Alex is so big, and growing into a little man. Alex is his own person, and he has such a big personality. Whatever he does, he does it with gusto (even if we don't want him to;). Nothing is out of bounds for him, Don caught him putting his foot into the sink tonight because it was dirty (mind you he climbed up the bathroom sink to get there). He is my daredevil.
Some days I just look at Alex and Zack and wonder what the future will bring. Adoption will give us a lifetime of surprises and I am thinking that Alex will be full of them.

Enjoying Summer Vacation

The Baldwin boys have been busy this summer! Besides playing with friends and family, Zack is going to camp a few days a week and we have been busy vacationing in Maine and Cape Cod. Music seems to be Zack's favorite thing to do; he even sang karaoke at a restaurant in Maine (AC/DC of course). He and Kara dug up a lot of sand crabs and enjoyed going from the beach to the pool to the beach to the (you get the idea:) Alexander found his inner beach and LOVED playing in the sand. He even seemed to be surfing, though much of the time there was no water under him, only sand. I have spent most of the summer in physical therapy as I pinched discs in my back in late June. It has been slow going but I seem to on the mend. Gosh it stinks to get older.

Two years ago today Don, Zack, Papa, and I went to court and Alex legally became our son. It doesn't seems like he has been our son for that long, yet it seems like forever. Alex is such a character and a fun loving boy. He is talking, running, and learning so much every day (not to mention the injuries that come all to frequently). Every day is an adventure to Alex, and currently his favorites include balls, horses, fire trucks, and of course his big brother.
Though I miss the baby days when we gave Alex bottles and rocked with him, I can't wait to see how he grows and changes.

It seems like spring has finally come (though I did see the snow fly last week on my way to work). The boys are loving the nice weather and we have enjoyed spending time outdoors. Zack is playing baseball again and is FINALLY A YANKEE. He played a game on Friday and got a single, made a few good plays, and scored a run. He was happy with his performance and we had fun cheering him on. Alex yelled the whole game, it was so cute hearing him bellow "Go Zack" and "Go Yankees", looking for Zack on the field every chance he got.
Culture day for our adoption group was this past weekend and the kids had a ball. We did a lot of crafts from their birth countries and had a parade marching across the room with flag from their birth countries. We even had local Girl Scouts come and help out, which was great. It is so wonderful to see all of the kids interact and we all enjoy spending time together. The boys ran all over, and the event ended with the annual playground visit (while all of the moms picked up of course).

Ok, I know that I have been reaaaalllllyyyy bad about keeping this updated in the last few months. I am trying to be the dutiful daughter/mother and fill these four posts with what our lives have been like since Christmas and our trip to Disney. We settled into the new year and life continued as usual. The boys have grown and changed so much over the past year. It is amazing how quickly it all goes.
Zachary is wonderful, maddening, and as funny as usual. He is doing so well in school this year, getting great grades and still loving Star Wars. Somehow he has Don and I, his grandparents, and Uncle Corey looking for the latest and most valuable action figure. I would just love the money that represents all of those figures; the money that we spend on those we love;) Baseball has started and all of the craziness that comes with it. Zach is excited, and though we again are not the Yankees, Don thinks that they have a good team this year.
Alexander is getting so big and his language has really taken off. He talks so much, and loves that he can get his wants ands needs across to us. Alex asks to play with friends and family daily, also wanting firehouse visits as it seems that he has gotten "the bug". We have gone to the firehouse to play nerf guns and Alex is hiding around corners and making Marines proud everywhere. Sports balls are a favorite of Alex's and he constantly wants to be outside to play basketball and baseball; he is so cute trying to imitate his brother.
Easter has just come and the boys had a great day. Alex "got it" and followed Zach like a puppuy, looking for eggs. "No ho ho, bunny, mommy," was what I heard this morning. ALex LOVED the candy and pretty much went on a healthy food strike for the day. We went to my sister's for brunch and then to Don's grandmother's, and the boys had a ball playing with all of their cousins. I hope you enjoyed the update!

How times flies! December came and went with a lot of activity and holiday cheer. Zachary sang in his holiday school concert and did a wonderful job. He even had a drum solo in one of the songs and beamed from ear to ear when it was over; Zachary made us keep it a secret so that all of his grandparents could be surprised.
We had our usual holiday craziness, hopping from house to house and trying to get it all done before Santa came. The boys had a wonderful Christmas and Alex really got the present thing this year. They both tore into their gifts and were very excited to see that their last gift from us was a trip to Disney (well Zach understood that, maybe not Alex yet). We left the day after Christmas and had a wonderful time. They both had their favorite parks but we all think that New Year's Eve was the best. All in all it was a great trip (as long as you take out the drive home;). Now we begin 2009 with the hope that the year brings us all good health, fun times, and much love. Happy New Year!

The fall got away from us and we are now gearing up for winter. The last couple of months have been busy and packed full of fun, craziness, and stress. Zachary and I went with my parents, Kristen, Kara, and my uncle's family to New York City for a day in November to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary (You go Barb and Ken!!!!!!!). We had a ball and everyone loved the Radio City Christmas show. Everyone came home exhausted but happy (especially the kids since we went to Toys-R-Us). Zachary and Alex continue to grow as brothers and their play constantly leaves us in stitches. Zachary loves to play military and he now has Alex doing it as well. Big bro taught little bro how to army crawl and take cover before shooting the enemy. I don't quite know how I feel about that, but they are wonderful to watch together.
Alex is old enough to understand that the holiday season is something "different" and he walks around the house saying,"ho ho ho", and,"la la la la la", which make us all join in. Alex's language continues to grow and change as he strings words together, and you can see how proud he is as he talks and is understood by others.
Zachary had his first report card and did wonderful. His teacher is very pleased with his progress, though he is chatty (just like me unfortunately). He is looking forward to Christmas, making lists, pleading for gifts, and decorating our tree while singing his favorite tunes.
We have determined that Alex is our dare devil. In September he got stitches, and in November he went to the ER after hitting his head on a wooden Thomas house. He definitely keeps us on our toes and we are thankful that Zachary is not quite as adventurous (though he did seem a little put out that Alex got stitches before he did).
As we move through December, we wish all of you a safe and happy holiday.

Fall is in full swing and the Baldwins are a family on the go! Zach has had his first field trip and our annual apple picking was a great success. There is nothing like watching your sons spend time together looking for the holy grail of apples. We had a ball at the apple orchard with the boys shooting apple guns, riding go carts, playing on farm equipment, and picking out the best pumpkin on the vine.

Alex has been up to his old tricks this fall. He fell on a matchbox and we took a quick trip to the hospital so he could get five stitches near his eye. He was such a trooper though we were a little traumatized from the drugging and stitching. I am sure that this is only the beginning so I'm glad that we had an easy first child so we could ease into parenthood. Alex would really have been a shock to our symptoms if he was the oldest:)

Our family enjoyed the Eastern European and Russian Culture Festival that our adoption group holds every year. We all played with friends, heard Russian stories, made cultural crafts (really, doesn't everyone want to make a dombra;) and spent time with family. It was a great day and was so nice to see so many children that share birth countries and common cultures.

Here are the pics of Zach's first day of school. We always take a picture under the same tree and so far he has not turned "too cool" to do it:) He was wearing his new Giants jersey which has caused his father much pain and anguish. Alex was too adorable when I took these pics. He and I took a walk around the neighborhood and he was happy as a clam to walk like a big boy. Well the second picture shows how he looked before bedtime because we actually walked a 1/2 mile! It's amazing to see how much he has grown.

Alex enjoyed his first trip to Great Escape. Everyone had a great time, especially since Zach was finally at the right height for all of the roller coasters. He was an awesome brother though, and rode the little kid rides with Alex as well.

We spent our last week of vacation going to Baltimore, Maryland and had a wonderful time. Unfortunately Alex got his first black eye falling on a toy two days before we left so he had a big shiner for the trip. Zachary and Alex had a great time going to the science and children's museum; I think we spent five hours at one museum as it was so much fun. The aquarium was great but they have a no stroller rule so we spent our time running after Alex and were exhausted at the end of the day. Don and Zachary went to their Yankee vs Oriole game and were actually able to see another one the next night as well. It was amazing, after the Yankees left town it was like they took half of the city's population with them. We found a great Russian store and Don was very patient as I bought a bunch of items for the boys. Of course we seem to find fire houses wherever we go and Zach somehow convinced the Baltimore firefighters to let him put their gear on and sit in their truck. My little man:) Alex was in a continual state of excitement due to seeing so many boats. For Zach it was trucks, for Alex, boats all the way.

Soon is was time for Zach and I to get ready for school. He got through the first few days and described it as,"awesome." He seems to like his teacher and has some buddies in his class.

Alex returned to daycare and settled in after having the summer off without missing a beat. He has enjoyed playing with his friends and cousin Emily, and we are getting wonderful reports. Zach's first day of school pics will be posted soon. Toodles!

Boy am I behind! We went to Mystic, CT with my parents, Kristen, and her family a couple of weeks ago. The kids had a wonderful time, with the ocean being the highlight. Zach boogie boarded, Alex enjoyed the waves, and girls loved paying in the sand and finding shells. We went to the Seaport and besides looking for jellyfish all day, Zachary was in a play and hammed it for all to see. The aquarium was great; the kids touched sting rays and millipedes, fed birds from their hands, and Alex kept saying,"ish" every time we saw something in water, which was all day. Of course the kids sucked us into all kinds of shopping, which made the all of our pockets a little lighter (Nana and Papa's especially). Alex also found his inner two year old (a week early mind you) and began having tantrums which made for very happy parents;) Overall we had a wonderful time and were very sad to go home.
The day after we got home Alex officially entered the terrible twos. He is such a big boy now, and my baby is not so much a baby anymore. It has been such a joy to see him grow and change over the last year. The bottles are gone, Alex feeds himself (for the most part), and potty training is imminent. Let me tell you, I cling to the bedtime routine with all of our cuddling. I will not let go that easily!

Making Money and Hiding Out

Zachary has set up shop! If anyone is in our area in August, Zack's Place will be open. He and his father bought candy to sell to neighborhood kids and we had a family meeting to determine price, profit margin, and to decide what will be done with the profits. I am proud to say that Zachary will be donating a portion of these profits to a children's charity or to Malutka Baby Home in Karaganda. He is very excited about the "store" and was so happy when he got his first customer.

Alex and Zach continue to make us laugh every day. You have to love those disguises:) Our days have been fun, tiring, and exhausting all rolled into one. Now we are getting ready to vacation at the ocean and Zachary seems to be bringing everything but the kitchen sink. We all can't wait to play in the ocean and relax around the campfire.

The boys had a great time in Cooperstown over the fourth of July weekend. Alex got to ride a pony and seemed to love it. We enjoyed the Baseball Hall of Fame and spending time with Don's family. Zach had a ball fishing and even caught five fish! The boys played ball with Daddy and spent some quality family time around the campfire. Don't you love the picture of Zach in the stroller? I always tell him that he'll always be my baby. He just proved it:)

We had more to celebrate on the 4th as it was one year from the the day that Don got Alex in Almaty. It seems so hard to believe that Alex has been our son for a whole year. I look at the blog from last year and see how little Alex was, and then see what a big boy he is now. Alex is a fun loving, giggly, spirited boy (my work is cut out for me, as has a temper), who has a great sense of adventure. He will do anything that Zachary does, and then look to Zach to see if he approves. I was listening to them play on my bed the other day and they laughed and giggled for an hour. Yes, there is quite an age difference between the two, but there is also a lot of love. One of Alex's favorite things to do is to crawl on top of Zach when he is laying down. Once he's on top, he sticks his thumb in his mouth and all is right with the world. Zach gets his hair pulled the whole time this happens but he takes it like a man and I think that he loves the fact that Alex finds such comfort in being close to him.

Happy Birthday Zachary! I can't believe that our boy is now 9! It seems like yesterday that he was a baby, not a crazy, adorable, nine year old boy. Zachary did have a great birthday, partying all weekend at various celebrations. He loved laser tag at his party with his friends, and enjoyed baseball cupcakes at his game:)

One more week to go before summer vacation and we are all chomping at the bit. Soon the boys and I will be off and can enjoy ourselves.

The Baldwin Brothers are Back!

Summer is so close we can taste it, and Zach and Alex have been taking full advantage of the good weather. Between Zach riding his bike and Alex saying, "Side, side", we feel like we are never indoors. Zach is almost done with baseball and although his team really is this generations version of the Bad News Bears, they have shown improvement and Zach loves being the team's catcher.

We have already been camping and Alex loves it as much as the rest of us do. Zach played with buddies all weekend and Alex did his best impression of Pig Pen. Alex continues to do well and is going through a big growth spurt right now, eating us out of house and home. He is talking more and more and loves to imitate everything his big brother does, including a somersault this morning! Maybe I'll get my Olympic gymnast yet:)

Zachary had his spring concert and true to form his teacher continues to put him behind taller children. He did a great job and we did the bob and weave so that we could see him show off. His birthday is coming up and he has given us ideas daily for gifts (far more than we have the money for of course:) Soon Zachary and I will be done with school and we have some great camping trips planned for the summer.

BTW The nail in the finger is NOT real, just our son's sense of humor at work.

Baseball season has begun! Zach had his first game tonight and did really well. The other team was really good so we won't talk about the score, just that my boy had a single and made some good plays. He continues to do well in school and reports that science is his favorite subject.

Alex continues to grow and thrive. He does tend to be in the dog house (hence the picture) but is such a lovable little boy. Alex is talking more and more every day and is quite spirited ( my nice way of saying that he has a temper:) It's hard to imagine that in a few weeks we will have known Alex for a whole year. It seems like yesterday that we saw our beautiful little boy sucking his thumb, wearing his famous pink outfit. Toodles!

The boys had a ball decorating eggs at Em and Kara's house on Friday; though I think we wound up wearing far more dye than they did:) Sunday can quickly and Zach was more than willing to tell us when it was 6:00am so he could get up (nice try Bud). The boys had a ball searching for their Easter baskets and eggs, and Zach was so cute helping Alex. Every time that Alex found an egg, he thought it was a ball and threw it across the room. Unfortunately we will have less egg salad this week as he cracked about 5 eggs;) The boys looked at their stash and chased each other around the house playing cars.

Soon it was time for church, which was slightly disastrous. Zach was great, Alex was another matter. Many shrieks later we left and brunched with the Hines' at our house. Even though there were only four kids; boy are they loud! In the afternoon we traveled to Don's grandmother's for a visit. Zach and Alex both had a ball playing with their cousins, and we all came hope happy and very tired.

Hello all! Everyone in the Baldwin household is currently germ free (for a change) and trying to survive this miserable winter. Zachary is currently on winter break and we are enjoying a quiet week at home. School is going well for him and he continues to look forward to his weekly guitar lessons. Pretty soon we will have a rock star on our hands I'm sure. The Wii is a favorite game for us right now, and Zachary loves to beat his parents in some crazy racing game that I don't quite understand and as a result play very badly. Zachary continues to be a good big brother and I love to watch him take care of Alex.
Alex is doing very well and the pediatrician is very happy with his progress. He is growing by leaps and bounds and he still amazes me with the amount of food that he takes in. Climbing and Thomas the Tank Engine are currently Alex's favorite things to do, so needless to say baby proofing is a priority in our home. Another favorite past time is giving Zachary surprise hug and kiss attacks, spontaneously jumping on him in an effort to spread the love:)
I love to watch Alex and Zachary interact. I was initially concerned about the age difference between the boys, and whether or not they would have a close relationship. I shouldn't have worried because they are wonderful together. Alex looks at Zach like he is the sun, moon, and stars and Zachary is very patient with his little bro. They played Mega Blocks the other day and pretty soon the Matchboxes were having battles with Star Wars clone troopers. You have to love when that happens.

Christmas and Beyond

It was a wonderful and crazy Christmas at the Baldwins. Alex had a great first Christmas and Zach loved to tell him all of the things that we do as a family during the holiday season. Alex is too small to truly understand but he did get caught up in the excitement. Zachary's Santa list seemed to grow by the day and soon it was Christmas Eve.

The boys had a great Christmas Eve spending time with both families. Alex was pretty overwhelmed when it came time to open presents so Zach stepped up and helped his little brother out. Christmas morning came and we had to wake Alex up. He was relaxed but seemed pretty surprised to see his grandparents at his house. The boys had a great time opening their presents and we enjoyed a breakfast to celebrate Alex's first Christmas with his family. We spent the day with our families and had a ball seeing the boys play with their new toys.

Two days after Christmas we went to Hershey, PA for a mini vacation. The boys loved the pool and we spent our time at amusement parks beautifully lit up with Christmas lights, eating chocolate at Hershey Chocolate World, and enjoying (and shopping) in Amish country. We even saw a calf being born, boy was that an interesting conversation with Zach. Zach became a temporary worker for Hershey and searched high and low for the perfect vacation toy (like he didn't get enough already).

The boys are enjoying the holiday season and all that it entails. Zachary was so excited to get our tree with Alex this year, and loved climbing on the trucks at the Boght Road Firehouse. His Santa list gets longer by the day, and he was very sweet finding items in the Sunday papers to buy for loved ones. Zach's guitar lessons are going very well and he has added Jingle Bells to his growing song list. Last week we went to Zachary's first night time Christmas concert and it was wonderful. His group sang so well and Zachary seemed like he had a great time performing for the crowd. Though he was nervous, Zachary is definitely not shy;) Zachary was also named Star of the Week. We are all very excited about this and are happy that he is putting such effort into school.

Alex continues to thrive and seems unfazed by all of the holiday craziness. He is growing by leaps and bounds and thankfully we are almost up to date with all of his shots. The poor little guy is getting 4-5 shots a doctor visit! Alex's vocabulary is growing and the pediatrician reports that his speech is advanced for his age. Not bad for a boy who never heard English before May!

Another Day of Firsts

Thanksgiving has come and gone; leaving us thankful and sick as well. It was a wonderful day for us to enjoy each other and be thankful that our family found each other. We all had a good day though Alex got sick that night. It's unfortunate that Alex seems ill frequently like Zach was in his first year home, though I know it will get better as he build antibodies.

Alex is doing so well. He loves going to day care and Emily is there to make sure that everyone is nice to her cousin. Of couse they all love Alex, he smiles and they are putty in his hands;) Alex looks at Zach like he is the sun, moon, and stars all rolled into one. It's so neat to see him run after Zach and try to imitate something that he has done or said. Zach continues to be Zach and makes me laugh daily with his imagination and sense of humor. He loves taking his guitar lessons and has given us many concerts (who knew there were so many variations of Mary Had a Little Lamb).

Now the Christmas season is upon us and we look forward to showing Alex the wonder and craziness of it all.

How time flies! Alex has been home for almost 4 months and it feels like forever. He has cut teeth (finally!), talked, walked, had an operation and what seems like a million shots, been baptized, and celebrated his first Halloween. Whew! I don't know about Alex but I am tired. Alex has taken it all in stride, and amazes us every day with his smiles, ever present laugh (he is his mother's son), and determination. If you have not seen Alex since he came home you may not recognize him. He is growing a lot and LOVES his food. Alex is beginning to get ham hocks for legs (in addition to the big belly) and they are soooooo cute! He is healing well from his surgery and the surgical site does not bother him at all. The umbilical hernia is still there but we have been assured that it will resolve itself.
Alex's christening was a wonderful day. Aunt TT, Uncle Corey, and Aunt Melissa are Alex's godparents and Alex looked adorable walking around his party, possibly becoming overwhelmed with how much family he now has;) After that Alex and Zachary celebrated Eastern European day with all of our friends whose lives are touched by adoption. Everyone had a great time making crafts, learning new words and listening to a local teacher tell us a story in Russian. Zach and Alex were especially attentive, I could tell that Alex still remembered the cadence of the language; he was mesmerized as the woman spoke.
The Baldwin family attended the annual Brown family Halloween party and we had a great time. Somehow Zachary had convinced us to dress up Alex as Yoda and Zach complimented him by wearing a Clone Trooper costume. Both boys had a great day, and we all went home exhausted. Halloween was another great night. Zach, Alex, Kara, and Emily had a ball and our posse had a ball cruising the neighborhood for sugar.
Zachary is doing well and is so excited to begin his guitar lessons next week. I am afraid that we have a budding Jon Bon Jovi on our hands. He is great with Alex, and seems to have all of daycare/before care putty in his hands. We are blessed to have such wonderful boys.

Alex had surgery today for two of his hernias. He was such a trooper and seemed to really love the valium;) He played in some ride on cars in the PACU until it was time to go to the OR and had a ball. They let me go into the OR room with Alex until he was asleep and an hour later he was done. We were home by 12:30 and he (and Don) were alseep soon after.

We have had a quiet couple of weeks and are enjoying the end of summer. Zach, my homebody, is loving his quiet time with mom and dad and Alex is doing great. He is gaining weight and I daresay I saw some cellulite on his newly chunky thighs. He enjoyed his first camping trip and was a wild man in the water, though we substituted smores around the campfire for rice cereal and pears:). Alex's surgery has been scheduled for September 28th and we are anxious to get it out of the way. Zach continues to be a super big brother and is helpful in so many ways. This Sunday Zach, his dad, and Uncle Corey are going to Zach's first Yankee game. He is over the moon about it and took his clothes out on Monday in anticipation of the big day. Toodles! Alex was the life of the party tonight. He tore into his own personal cake like it was his business! Our boy will definitely love baked goods, he could not get enough. Alex had a great birthday and was so tired he went to bed without a peep.

Today we went to the surgeon and are planning when Alex will have surgery for his multiple hernias. He has three but only two need to be operated on. Otherwise he is doing great and still sleeping like a champ.

Settling in

After a couple nights of great sleep, Alex went on a bit of a strike. The 3am wake up call was a little rough, but he is on a much better schedule now. Alex is the same smiley baby that we fell in love with in Karaganda. He is babbling all the time, and is pulling himself up constantly. We definitely will be seeing him walk soon.

Spitting up also seems to be Alex's favorite thing to do, so we've changed his feeding schedule to see if the reflux improves. Luckily the spitting up doesn't bother him, but we still want to make sure he puts on weight. The doctor did find a hernia so we will be meeting with the pediatric surgeon to see when it needs to be taken care of. The doctor is very pleased with how Alex is doing, and feels that he's right where he needs to be.

Zachary is turning out to be a super big brother. He loves to pick Alex up and talks to him in the cutest voice. Zachary is willingly sharing his tv time and even gave Alex a Star Wars figure to play with (that is true love to Zach). I have been trying to convince him to go out with me for some one on one time but he doesn't want to leave his little brother.

Alex is home! Corey pulled in with my boys this afternoon and we had a wonderful reunion. However I do know how celebrities feel in regards to the papperazzi:) Alex was great and kept up with all of the commotion. He looks great, though even my Irish skin looks tan next to him! After everyone left he had a bottle and fell asleep fairly well. Let's see if it lasts all night, but we'll take it as it comes. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate Alex's homecoming, we are touched that you wanted to share such a special day with us.

Dunkin Donuts! Though it doesn't taste the same, Don was in heaven. Alex slept well last night and seems to like the formula and baby food that I packed for Don. You can hear in his voice that Don is enjoying himself with Alex, and is getting lots of cuddle time in. Alex is crawling everywhere, and smiled when Zach talked to him on the phone. They are all hanging out, waiting until their embassy appointment tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed that it goes well.

Don called! Everyone is great, just a little tired. Don was reunited with a sleeping Alex at 1:00 am, and our baby boy had a great night sleep. When he called, Lola had just left with paperwork to be filed at the embassy, and Don was getting ready to feed Alex a snack. Alex is crawling all over the place, but still no teeth in sight. He didn't make a peep when Don put him on the phone, but boy did he yell when Don finished feeding him:) Don seems much more relaxed now, and I dare say happy. Their embassy appointment is on Friday afternoon and we should know that night if they can come home a day early. :)

I spoke to Don a few times yesterday and he was doing well. He has determined that German food is not for him, but the beer was not so bad (especially under the circumstances). I was his wake up call this morning (his not ours) and Lufthansa shows that his plane is in the air and ahead of schedule. He should be in Almaty by 2pm our time and hopefully will be with Alex by 3:30pm. I don't expect to hear from him today as it will be 1am his time before he gets to the apartment. Happy 4th of July!

Zachary's adoption was so easy that I guess we were due for a rough haul from beginning to end with Alex's. Don's flight was delayed three hours in JFK so he missed his connecting flight in Frankfurt. On top of that, the airline lost his luggage. The airline shuttled him to a hotel and he got a hot meal and is hopefully now sleeping for a while. In the meantime I have logged in countless hours with the airline, agency and pretty much anyone I could get information from. Don will leave Germany around 7:05 am our time on the 4th and should be in Almaty in the afternoon. Arrangements have been made regarding childcare for Alex until Don gets there. Hopefully this should not delay the appointment or them getting home. Please say a prayer for them, I think they could use all they can get.

The travel agent had some new tickets open up today so now Don is leaving on Monday. It is much better for Don since he would have been in country for over a day before Alex came to Almaty. Now he lands in Almaty at 1:45pm our time on the 3rd and only has to wait a little while before seeing Alex.

Don is leaving on Sunday to begin the long trek back to get Alex! He is leaving from JFK and will layover in London. After arriving the morning of the 3rd, Don will sleep the day away before meeting Alex's train at 6:30 am on the 4th (that's 8:30 pm on the 3rd out time). After a medical and embassy apoointment, father and son will leave on the 8th and due to time changes, they will arrive home on the 8th as well. Say a prayer that the trip is uneventful and that Don and Alex will get home no worse for the wear.

It's only fitting that we name our last Karaganda post the same as how we started the trip. We had our morning visit with Alex and it was a short but good one. After walking in his outer room, we learned that he and the rest of his posse were still asleep. We all went to peek in on Alex, and after a few minutes we went back to the playroom to wait. After he got up, I fed him (he spit up on me three times after that feeding) and we went to the playroom. It was a quiet visit, and Alex seemed content to get lots of loving. We are leaving at 7:30 tonight to fly to Almaty and will not be in communication until we're home. We hope you enjoyed the blog, and we'll see you on your side of the ocean soon.

We enjoyed our last full night in Karaganda. Olga came with us to dinner, and tomorrow we say goodbye to Alex and begin the long trek home. The caretakers got their gift this afternoon, and were very appreciative. We tried to express thank you to them as well for all of the love they have given to Alex these last nine months. We be, gan packing, and have it under control. It will be even better after we get ready tomorrow morning and can pack even more. Tomorrow afternoon will be our last email/communication with family until we get home on Saturday. We will update the blog when we are at home. Pah-kah!

We went to court this morning, and it went well. Zach was with us for part of the appointment, and Pops was even called in to answer a few questions. The judge was very funny and kept cracking jokes to others. They were very touched that Pops was willing to come so far to be here for Zachary and the rest of us. After a favorable determination in court, we went to the orphanage for a celebration with Beth and Phil, the director, the doctors, Larissa and Olga. We had smoked meat, cheeses, bread, juices and tea. There was even a cake from Assorti to celebrate the occasion. The director and doctor were so happy to spend time with Zach, and we gave out them gifts to show our appreciation. Larissa commented on what nice and easy families we were, and that they hope our new children grow up to be just like Zachary. The biggest shocker was Zachary who entered the NEEEIIIIGGGGGHHH club with Don and James. (Mrs. Bonesteel, don't tell the other kids please; Zachary is afraid that Sierra will be mad at him for eating horse). He ate eight pieces of it, and was sad when they took it away. It was all I had not to gag when he ate it ON MY LAP! We will blog again tonight and send pics. Bye!

Today was a busy day. We all went to see Alex in the morning. Everyone had a great time visiting with him, and we are all sad that he’ll be staying behind when we go home. His legs are getting stronger every day, and I would be shocked if he didn’t have teeth when he comes home to us. Pops and Zach stayed back to do schoolwork today while Don and I had our second visit with Alex. He was his usual cheery self, though we forgot to bring the diapers so he looked like an Oompah Loompah with the usual towel for a diaper. After our visit Olga took us to the notary, and we waited for 45 minutes in the car until it was our turn. We signed our life away and then went to Assorti to dinner with Pops and Zach. Tomorrow is court, so say a prayer that it goes well. Love to you all, and enjoy a hamburger for us!

We had a successful trip to the ministry and the mall! Larissa recommended that all of us go, so Pops and Zach took a trip with us to the Ministry of Education. We went into a large office, and four people asked us questions about our lives, specifically Zach for about 10 minutes. Even Pops and Zach were asked questions. We were a tad bit nervous before hand because Larissa said that the press would be there. They want to do an article on America and international adoption. Thankfully they didn’t show up or if they did we didn’t know about it. The last thing we want is a picture of us in the paper; that would not really help us to blend in. We also bought the rest of Alex’s clothes and just have to get the diapers tomorrow. It looks like Pops and Zach are also going to court with us, which has Zach kind of freaked out. Now it’s really under the wire, so have a cold one on us (but not if you’re driving or under 21).

We got our schedule for the next few days and are we going to be busy! Larissa will be here later to take some of the gifts we bought, and then we are off to the Ministry of Education to answer some questions. There will be no afteroon visit with Alex due to the appointment so we will shop for the rest of things we need for his trip to Almaty. Tomorrow we meet Larissa to go to the notary and have our usual two visits with our boy. Olga will be coming out to dinner with us on Tuesday night. We are happy to say thank you for all she has done for us. On Wednesay we go to court at 9am and then to the orphanage for a party with the doctors. We can get a little time in with Alex in the morning and then have our normal afternoon visit as well. Thursday we go see Alex twice and then we leave for the airport at 7:30. Whew! I am tired already.

Today we shopped until we dropped (literally, we just got up from a nap). We got Alex clothes for when he will be escorted to Almaty later in the month, and little Kazak goodies for the boys. It was hysterical watching us try to estimate his current size, when nothing he wears ever has a tag on it. Dad pantomimed to the clerk, and we found most of what we needed.
Finding traditional Kazak items is not as easy now as it was when we were here for Zach. We have done a lot of searching and we definitely walked a few miles today looking for just the right thing. The stores we went to today we have been at before so I'm sure they loved seeing us again, knowing that we would be spending more money.
Before we did all that however, we found the local firehouse and Zach was in love. The trucks are at least 50 years old and the equipment was just as out of date. Their ladder truck was a tow truck with a ladder welded on. Boy you guys in Waterford are lucky to have the equipment that you do. Have a great day, and have a nice hot pizza and wings on us!
